Our AI philosophy

How we think about artificial intelligence, why we build the way we do, and what we believe responsible AI in learning should mean.

Cognitive integrity matters

We believe in protecting the human capacity for independent thinking, critical reasoning, and authentic learning. AI should strengthen these abilities, not erode them.

AI is changing how we learn, work, and think. At Erigo we see this as a chance to build systems that genuinely support human development, alongside risks that deserve serious attention.

Our philosophy starts from a simple principle: AI should strengthen human capability, never replace it. Every feature we build is measured against that principle.

Transparency first

When AI is involved, we say so. You always know when you are interacting with an automated system and what data shapes the result.

A human in the loop

AI assists, people decide. Judgment calls and learning paths always involve human oversight. Automation handles the routine so people can focus on what matters.

No manipulation

We reject dark patterns, dependency-building mechanics, and attention-grabbing techniques. Our AI is designed to serve your goals, not to maximise engagement metrics.

Data minimalism

We only collect what is necessary. Personal data stays within the EU, encrypted at rest and in transit. We never sell your data or use it for anything outside the platform.

Explainable results

When our AI gives a recommendation, you can understand why. No black boxes where clarity is needed.

Continuous review

AI systems drift. We monitor for bias, accuracy, and unintended effects. When something does not work as intended, we fix it or remove it.

How we think about AI risk

Three concepts guide how we assess AI's impact on learning and cognition.

Cognitive integrity
The preservation of independent thinking, critical analysis, and authentic decision-making in the presence of AI systems.
Dopamine logic
Design patterns that exploit reward systems for engagement rather than real value. We actively avoid these in our products.
Synthetic safety
The assurance that AI-generated content and interactions are clearly identified and bound by ethical guardrails.

What we refuse to build

Some applications of AI have no place in a learning environment. We draw clear lines.

Surveillance-based assessment

We do not use AI to monitor keystrokes, eye movement, or behaviour patterns to infer engagement or cheating. Trust and integrity come first.

Emotion recognition

Inferring emotional state from facial expressions or voice is unreliable and invasive. We do not do it.

Predictive scoring of potential

AI should assess demonstrated competence, not predict future ability based on demographics or behaviour.

Engagement maximisation

Our success metric is learning outcomes, not time on platform. We do not optimise for dependency.

Meet ELSA

Our AI learning assistant, built to embody these principles.

ELSA is our AI learning assistant. She helps you navigate content, answers questions, and points you toward what to learn next.

Clearly identified

ELSA always introduces herself as an AI assistant.

Explains her reasoning

She explains why she suggests something, and admits when she is uncertain.

Encourages independence

ELSA nudges you to think critically and explore topics on your own.

Hands off to people

When complex judgment is needed, ELSA points you toward human support.

Your conversations are yours

Your conversations are saved to your account so you can return to them. They are never used to train models, and you can delete any of them.

Our commitment

We meet the requirements of the EU AI Act and go further. This is not just regulatory box-ticking, it reflects what we believe responsible AI development means.

Compliant with the EU AI Act

We follow applicable regulation and ensure our AI systems meet strict safety and transparency requirements.

Transparent AI labelling

You are always informed when interacting with AI, along with clear information about its capabilities and limitations.

Regular bias reviews

We run ongoing reviews to identify and reduce bias in our AI systems and ensure fair treatment for every member.

Data stays within the EU

All member data is stored and processed within the European Union, in line with GDPR and with your privacy as the priority.

Keep your judgment your own

Erigo is built on cognitive integrity. Learn alongside AI without handing over your thinking. We argue instead of hype, and show instead of shout.
